The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to respond to pleas by jurist Ram Jethmalani and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy alleging that the Narendra Modi government has failed to take effective steps in bringing back black money stashed abroad.
“My conscience says the present government and its bureaucrats will not recover this money” as most of them were loyal to the UPA government, which resisted every effort to bring back unaccounted money parked in foreign banks, Jethmalani said. “This government will never get back black money,” he said.
Describing the steps taken so far to recover the money as “great fraud on the nation”, Jethmalani told a bench headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu that the “present government is not taking any effective step to bring back the black money”.
Jethmalani also attacked finance minister Arun Jaitley without taking his name, saying “the innocent finance minister” has been quoted as saying that India has not identified any tax-haven.
