Though more number of students has cleared SSLC examination this year compared to last year, Dakshina Kannada has slipped three positions to be ranked 29th among the 34 educational districts. The district saw the success rate rise 0.54 percentage points to 78.77 per cent from last year.
The Education Department here initiated several measures and had hoped to improve district’s ranking. But the fact that the district was pushed down three notches brought a sense of disappointment to the officials.
Toppers
What came as a solace was that M. Aayisha from Alva’s Kannada Medium Secondary School has been the topper in Kannada medium in the State with 612 marks. Younger of the two daughters of Abdul Rehman Musliyar, Ms. Aayisha wants to pursue commerce and become a chartered accountant.
Lavanya M. Padakannaya from Lourdes High School, Bejai, with 611 marks came second in Kannada medium. Like her elder sister Chaitanya, Ms. Lavanya wants to pursue degree in commerce. .
The school, too, was overjoyed. “She was studious and did well in the preparatory examinations. We hope to achieve cent per cent results,” said Headmistress Sister Leena D’souza. Prajna H. Putran from Vyasamaharshi Vidhyapeeta, Mulki, came first in Dakshina Kannada with a score of 618.
“I had difficulty in science paper; hence, I lost two marks,” said the daughter of bank official Shobha and businessman Hemanth Putran.
Ms. Prajna wants to pursue Science and do engineering course. “I love science,” she said.Abhishek J. Shetty from Alva’s English Medium Secondary School, Moodbidri, has scored 612 marks. He is among the 95 students from English and Kannada medium who scored more than 85 per cent marks.
Kudla, qualitatively better
A qualitative assessment by the SSLC Board — taking into account the number of students with distinction (85 per cent above marks), first class (60 to 85 per cent) and second class (50 to 60 per cent marks) — has put the district at the third position.
In the first such exercise, the board found that as many as 2,912 students from Dakshina Kannda have secured more than 85 per cent marks. There are 11, 082 students with marks between 60 and 85 per cent; 5,455 students with marks between 50 and 60 per cent and 8,517 students with pass marks.
