As many as 180 students participated in the summer sports camp organised by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) at District Sports Stadium in Nagercoil.

The fully residential programme to identify talented students in sports and offer further training was attended by 55 girls and 125 boys. The students were trained in football, hand ball, basketball and athletic events.

The students from three educational districts – Nagercoil, Thuckalay and Kuzhithurai – participated. Participating at the valedictory function, Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan gave away participation certificates to the students.

All trainees were given food with an egg a day during the training programme.

The programme aimed at identifying competitive excellence in sports to mould sportspersons to ‘international standards,’ and providing competitive training from acclaimed coaches.

Mr. Chavan urged the youngsters to take to sports in a big way, as it fetched jobs under sports quota with the public sector undertakings and nationalised banks. The sports training camps were being conducted on half-yearly and quarterly basis, and spaced out to be conducted at least five times a year.

District Sports Officer L. Theerthos was present.
