Water released early for poll gain

The remaining 45 MGD will commence from June 30

Hyderabad: The remaining 45 MGD of Krishna Phase III water will be supplied from June 30. Sources said that the release of half of the supply was a political plan to garner votes for the upcoming GHMC elections.

Senior Water Board officials said, “Firstly, there are not enough water lines in the added municipalities. There is no problem in the core city; the main city is receiving water as per schedule.

Areas like Alwal, Quthbullapur, Kapra, Malkajgiri do not have proper distribution and storage systems, these areas have old networks that were not built as per the Water Board norms and cannot take the pressure, that is why there is less supply”.

“There are also leakage problems because of the bad network. The remaining 45 MGD will commence from June 30. From the Krishna drinking water project 270 MGD, Manjeera 120 MGD, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar 40 MGD — total 430 MGD — of water will reach the city by June end, this will improve the water situation. Once the Godavari project commences there would be no water scarcity”.

Out of the 60 filling stations, those falling in the adjoining municipalities are receiving tanker requests. Manjeera Colony, Sehna Colony, Anand Rao Nagar and Greenfield Colony — Alwal are completely dependent on tankers, as is the Secunderabad Cantonment Board area.

Due to rapid urbanisation after the merger of surrounding municipalities with Hyderabad, and the growth of the IT sector, ORR growth corridor and industrial clusters, there is a huge water demand in addition to the normal domestic demand.

The Osmansagar and Himayatsagar Lakes, the city’s traditional drinking water sources, are drying up frequently. Added to the problem are the dwindling inflows to the Singur and Manjira reservoirs. At present, the city is experiencing a shortage of over 100 MGD of water.
