Northants' all-rounder David Willey hit a run-a-ball 103 as his side shared an evenly-contested second day with Derbyshire at the County Ground.

He hit 10 fours and five sixes and shared a record seventh-wicket stand of 163-runs with Josh Cobb who made 95.

Mark Footitt and Tom Taylor each took three wickets as the home side were bowled out for 324, a deficit of 19.

Ben Slater (21 not out) and Chesney Hughes (35 not out) took Derbyshire to 76-0 at the close, a lead of 95.

Northants had been reduced to 101-6 as Taylor had Azharullah caught by Matthew Critchley for a duck and had Adam Rossington and Rob Keogh caught by Hughes in the slips.

Shiv Thakor claimed the two vital wickets having Cobb caught behind five short of his century before Willey holed out to Hashim Amla.

With the injured Alex Wakely not able to bat, Derbyshire pressed ahead and will hope to build a big lead on day three.

Derbyshire elite performance director Graeme Welch:

"If you said on day one we would be close to a hundred runs ahead we would have taken it.

"With the wicket deteriorating and one or two balls going up and down, I wouldn't like to be batting last so we're happy where we are."

Northamptonshire head coach David Ripley:

"Alex has been for an X-ray on his hand and it didn't show a break so hopefully with another day of ice and rest we can use him on the last day.

"Josh seemed fine but we need to be careful with those things and he's gone to the hospital to check everything is good and we're expecting him to be fielding tomorrow."
