Jayalalithaa acquittal is a setback to anti-corruption movement, netizens feel

Netizens gave the thumbs down to the Karnataka high court verdict acquitting AIADMK chief and former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa in the 66.65-crore disproportionate assets case with several of them raising apprehension that the judgment would be a setback to the anti-corruption movement in the country.

CHENNAI: Netizens gave the thumbs down to the Karnataka high court verdict acquitting AIADMK chief and former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa in the 66.65-crore disproportionate assets case with several of them raising apprehension that the judgment would be a setback to the anti-corruption movement in the country.

Jayaprakash Narayan, founder of Loksatta Party tweeted: "Acquittal of Jayalalithaa in DA case & public rejoicing show the complexity of rooting out corruption & the personalized, feudal politics".

"AP, Telangana, Tamil Nadu & Karnataka witness vast expenditure for vote buying(5-10 crore per Assembly candidate).Corruption is inevitable" he wrote.
Congress spokesperson and actor Khushbu tweeted: "1 word- "Acquitted" can’t take away your guilt… you have been making a mockery of the judicial system for the last 18 years. You u walk free, but can u sleep without guilt?"

"Two verdicts in three days are enough to lose our faith in JUDICIARY" wrote Arpit Jain on Twitter pointing to Jayalalithaa verdict and the Bombay high court’s stay on the verdict in the hit and run case against actor Salman Khan.

“After Seeing #JayaVerdict and #SalmanVerdict Now #DawoodIbrahim Planning to return #India and ask justice from Indian Court" one of the tweets said.
“Thought Jaya will be convicted??? Haha is there any history of a politician convicted for corruption in India? ? #JayaVerdict”” said another Twitter user.
However, there were tweets welcoming the verdict. “Today is mother's day in Tamil Nadu" read a widely retweeted tweet.

"I hope Tamil Nadu will develop in the upcoming years," another user, A Sivashankaran, wrote.
Similarly, Facebook and WhatsApp were flooded with posts on the Jayalalithaa’s verdict.
"Congratulations to Madam Jayalalithaa. She is released from disproportionate asset case now. Greetings and best wishes to her for this victory after a long struggle in her political career. Hope she will now take reformative action to bring transparent administration for growth without corruption," Ponraj Vellaichamy, who is the scientific advisor to former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, posted on Facebook.
