Opposition highlights plight of Karaikal fishermen

May 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated April 02, 2016 09:21 pm IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Opposition DMK Legislator A.M.H. Nazeem on Wednesday urged Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to write a letter to the Centre and prevail upon them to reject the Meenakumari report which would be injurious to the fishing community.

Participating in the debate, Mr. Nazeem said the Union Territory Government was keeping quiet without registering its protest against the Meenakumari report.

He said the fishermen of Karaikal were in a sad predicament as they were facing hardship at the hands of Sri Lankan naval personnel whenever they set out for fishing.

Vessels impounded

He said that on most occasions the fishermen and their vessels were impounded by the Sri Lankan authorities and the fishermen were not able to find a solution to their hardship.

The Puducherry Government should take up the problems of fishermen of Karaikal with the Centre.

The Government should also encourage deep sea fishing following the steps taken by the Tamil Nadu Government so that the fishermen will be able to have a sustained source of livelihood, Mr. Nazeem said.
