Meet highlights advances in keyhole surgery

The State conference of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) Kerala chapter that concluded here on Sunday highlighted advances in laparoscopic procedures in the treatment of various diseases.

Professors and medical experts from various medical colleges spoke on the advances in the field of keyhole surgery. The conference that began on May 8 dwelt on a areas relating to laparoscopy as it was the focus theme of the conference, ASI Kerala chapter functionaries said.

Presentations were followed by case study by postgraduate students from medical colleges in the presence of senior surgeons.

The video workshop held as part of the conference dealt with the basic concepts and recent advances in surgery of benign diseases and cancer, a press release by the association said. The workshop highlighted basic and advanced laparoscopic procedures in the treatment of the disease of biliary tract as also advanced techniques in cases of colonic and oesophageal malignancies.

The workshop highlighted advantages of thoracoscopic surgery for removal of complex oesophageal tumours. There were presentations on the importance of incorporating plastic surgery techniques in breast cancer surgery and surgery of pilonidal sinus, the release said. The new radio frequency ablation techniques in the treatment of varicose veins were also discussed.

The conference was inaugurated by ASI president Santosh John Abraham on May 9. Noted laparoscopic surgeon C. Palanivelu was honoured at the session.
