The Udupi District Chess Association, T.A. Pai Management Institute and Lions Club will organise the first Udupi National FIDE-rated Open Chess Tournament in Manipal from May 13 to 17.
Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, K. Rajgopal Shenoy, president of the association, said that the tournament was being held under the aegis of the United Karnataka Chess Association.
Already, 239 chess players from the State, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa, Gujarat and Rajasthan have registered for the tournament.
Another 50 players are expected to register.
The tournament will be held for boys and girls in the age groups of under-8, under-10, under-12, under-14 and under-16.
A total of 115 prizes worth Rs. 2 lakh will be given away in various categories.
The champion would get the Kallya Devaraya Shenoy Memorial Trophy and Rs. 30,000 in cash.
Five International Masters and Grandmasters are expected to participate in the tournament.
The tournament will be conducted as per FIDE laws and the FIDE Swiss system with nine rounds with time control of 90 minutes.
In case of a tie, the latest FIDE rules would be applied. The cash prizes would not be shared.
The tournament would be held at the K.K. Pai Block of TAPMI.

R. Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, will inaugurate the tournament on May 13. H.S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor of Manipal University, Suresh Prabhu, Lions District Governor, R.C. Natarajan, director of TAPMI, will be the chief guests.
K. Abhayachandra Jain, Minister for Sports and Fisheries, would give away the prizes on May 17.
Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, will be the guests, Dr. Shenoy said.
Ratnakar Shetty, Ganesh Pai, Ramesh Kini, Sudhir Beedu, office bearers of the organising committee, were present.
