National-level swimmer eve-teased in Bengaluru

The accused were living in a rented house close to the victim’s residence

BENGALURU: A 23-year-old national-level female swimmer was allegedly eve-teased by a gang of six inebriated students near her house in Mathikere early on Sunday. Following the incident, the police has detained them.

The incident took place near the swimmer’s house at SBM Colony near Brindavananagar in J.P. Park near Mathikere.

The youth are identified as Nitin, George, Bishab, Nawaz, Sanjay and Sanath. All are aged between 19 and 23 years and are said to be journalism and BBM students at a private college.

Some of them hail from Kerala and were staying in the city for the past few years. According to the police, the accused were living in a rented house close to the victim’s residence.

On Sunday night, they were reportedly partying and consuming alcohol on the terrace of their house. Around 1.30 am, the victim, who had gone out for dinner with her friends and coach, returned in an autorickshaw. As she was walking towards her house, the youths allegedly passed lewd comments. When she objected, they reportedly abused her in filthy language.

“Soon after the incident, the victim informed the police control room, who alerted the jurisdictional Yashwantpur police. They rushed to the spot and took six of them into custody. When questioned, they claimed that they did not eve tease the girl and alleged that she had hurled abuses at them for which they objected,” the police said.

The police also said that when they enquired with the neighbours about the students, they reportedly gave a good opinion about them.

Meanwhile, some of the accused students have exams scheduled for Monday. Police said it would make arrangement to allow them to appear for exams.
