Jonathan Bairstow scored a dazzling century as champions Yorkshire bossed the first day of their Division One clash with Hampshire at Headingley.
Bairstow, back in the Tykes line-up after England duties, scored 102 off 106 balls, digging the hosts out of a bit of trouble in the process and Yorkshire closed on 333-7.
James Tomlinson made an early breakthrough, trapping in-form Tykes opener Alex Lees in front for one. Adam Lyth (53) and Cheteshwar Pujara rebuilt patiently but the Indian was removed by Tomlinson for 18. Lyth was dismissed a ball after reaching his 50, edging Andre Adams behind.
In Adams' next over, Andrew Gale (30) was brilliant caught by a diving Michael Carberry at point.
Bairstow then battered the Hampshire attack, putting on with 155 with Jack Leaning (77no) before nicking Adams behind. Gareth Berg removed Adil Rashid (0) and Will Rhodes (4) cheaply but Tim Bresnan (23no) has helped rising star Leaning add 54 so far.
Worcestershire had a wretched day at Edgbaston, dismissed for 149 by Warwickshire. On what was the second day of their match, the hosts resumed on 258-8 but were quickly dismissed for 264.
Worcestershire though could not cope with the Bears’ pace attack, with Keith Barker and Chris Wright taking three apiece, Rikki Clarke two and Boyd Rankin one.
Skipper Daryl Mitchell was run out for just one and Moeen Ali missed his chance to impress the new England management, dismissed lbw by Wright for one.
Richard Oliver (13) and Alex Gidman (0) quickly followed, and Alex Kervezee (9) became Barker's second victim. Ben Cox (45) and Joe Leach (18) offered some resistance before falling.
With a first innings lead of 115 in the bag, Warwickshire extended in the evening session. Varun Chopra (72no) led the charge as the Bears closed on 105-2. Ian Westwood (12) and William Porterfield - who took 30 balls to get off the mark before falling for a 49-ball four - were the men to fall.
Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 245 at Chester-le-Street, with the visitors massively indebted to Wessels' 117. The Notts bowlers took three wickets late in the evening to restrict Durham to 69-3 in the reply.
Chris Rushworth made two early breakthroughs, pinning both Brendan Taylor (0) and Alex Hales (6) in front. Rushworth is beginning to be talked about as a potential England bowler and big wickets like that will only help his cause. Opener Steven Mullaney (15) then fell to Graham Onions and another in-form Durham quick, Aussie John Hastings, got rid of James Taylor - also lbw - for nine.
Mark Wood, fresh from his England debut, returned to the line-up and he found the edge of Samit Patel's bat, Phil Mustard taking the catch.
After lunch Chris Read (2) was bowled by Rushworth and Brett Hutton (3) nicked Wood behind to leave Notts 102-7. But Wessels finally found an ally in Vernon Philander (45), the pair adding a vital 110 before Hastings and Onions mopped up.
Mark Stoneman (44) and Keaton Jennings (18) gave Durham an excellent start to their reply, putting on 65 but Notts hit back with three late wickets.
Hutton, 22, playing his first match of the season and only his third first-class match, trapped Stoneman in front, and three balls later Jennings fell to Harry Gurney. Hutton, who replaced the out-of-form Will Gidman in the team, finished the day off by pinning nightwatchman Wood in front for one.
At Hove, Middlesex were bowled out for 269, and they were helped massively by an extraordinary extras total of 62, including 30 no balls from the generous Sussex attack, which was by far the highest contributor in the visitors' innings.
The hosts – who closed on 66-3 in reply - won the toss and elected to bowl, and were proved right to do so. Openers Nick Gubbins (0) and Sam Robson (8) went early, a wicket apiece for Steve Magoffin and Ajmal Shahzad, whose superb start to life at Hove continues - or at least Sussex hope it will continue on Tuesday. He had to come off with a pectoral injury.
Nick Compton (30) and Adam Voges (38) rebuilt patiently, but the Australian's innings was ended by Oliver Robinson. Shahzad returned to the attack and removed James Franklin for a duck. And Compton's 102-ball innings was ended when he fell to Robinson after lunch.
Neil Dexter (34) and John Simpson (16) held firm for a while, but Aussie Magoffin returned and dismissed both of them. Last men Toby Roland-Jones (34) and Steve Finn (21no) added invaluable runs, but Sussex may come to regret those extras.
James Harris, fresh from his nine-fer, removed Chris Nash (23), and Michael Yardy (9) and Matt Machan (13) also fell cheaply before the close.
