BSSK elections peaceful

Elections to the board of directors to the Bidar Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane cooperative sugar factory were peaceful on Sunday.

Officials had put up 43 polling booths in the 170-acre campus of the factory in Hallikhed-B village in Humnabad taluk.

Big names fighting the elections include Rajshekar Patil, MLC and Congress leader, Sanjay Kheny, factory president and relative of Ashok Kheny, MLA, and Subash Kallur, BJP leader and former president of the factory board.

BSSK is the oldest sugar factory in the district. It started making sugar from 1968, but has mostly remained in the red. The board has declared an accumulated loss of Rs. 134.3 crore, including last year’s loss of Rs.s 25.84 crore. It has over 24,000 share holding farmers across the district and nearly 1,500 employees. Voting percentage was around 40 per cent.

Results would be declared by Monday, officials said.
