LIRR train crashes into car on tracks, causes delays

A Long Island Rail Road train hit a car in Hewlett just before rush-hour Friday, shutting down service on the Far Rockaway Branch for more than an hour, officials said.

The New York-bound train clipped the car at the West Broadway grade crossing at 4:30 p.m., said LIRR spokesman Salvatore Arena. The woman driving was not seriously hurt.

Officials believe the gates were down, but were unclear how the car wound up on the tracks.
