Residents of Vedhambal Nagar, Pathi Gounder Thottam, Lenin Nagar, R.K. Nagar and a few other residential areas off Sanganur Road in Ganapathy, staged a protest on Friday morning demanding basic amenities.
According to sources, the residents took to the streets after suffering bad roads for the past few weeks. Coimbatore Corporation Councillor A. Nandhakumar said that the condition of the roads turned worse after the civic body undertook the underground drainage work and executed it at snail’s pace. The recent rains only added to the problem as the clay soil made even walking a challenging task.
He, along with Councillor P.V. Subramaniam and a few DMK workers, staged the protest on Sanganur Road. The sources said that the residents had been complaining to the civic body officials and also the Ward Councillor M. Gunasekaran (AIADMK) to no avail. Their last complaint was on Thursday night but nothing happened.
Mr. Subramaniam said that the Corporation undertaking the underground drainage work on the narrow streets of the area and the dug earth turning slippery in the recent rains angered the residents.
Councillor Mr. Gunasekaran said that the protest was DMK-instigated as the Corporation had undertaken the road restoration work on Friday morning, though it had rained on Thursday evening. In a few days from now, the residential areas would have good roads, he said.
