Samaj Kalyan Kendra in service of deaf and dumb children

JAMMU, May 8: J&K Samaj Kalyan Kendra a voluntary social and charitable Non Government Organization (NGO) is running a school for hearing impaired children in an evacuee property building at Shahidi Chowk here since 1981.
Giving this information in the Executive Committee meeting of the Kendra here today, Inderjit Khajuria president Samaj Kalyan Kendra said that School was upgraded and recognized by the Education Department to the level of secondary school in 1995 and higher secondary classes were added from 2012 on the directions of Directorate of Education but recognition of the same is still awaited.
He said the School is providing totally free education and technical training in two trades. Besides free education, uniforms and stationary is also being provided to the students by the School. Presently 84 boys and girl students are studying in the School, he added.
Mr Khajuria said so far 85 students of which 44 are girls have passed 10th class and 12 students have passed 12th class of which eight are girls. He said four of the passed out students of the School have entered into Government services of which three are male and one is female.
He said efforts are on to get Government jobs for other pass outs of the Institute against one percent quota of deaf and dumb.
Mr Khajuria said the school is purely being run on donation basis with negligible contribution of State Government as well as Social Welfare Department. He said Kendra is indebted to the generous monetary contribution by Governor N N Vohra to run the School. The Kendra has approached GoI for grant in aid under Din Dayal Upadhaya scheme continuously since 1990 but to no avail.
Mr Khajuria said that admissions are open throughout the year and the Kendra will welcome deaf and dumb students to get education for their career.
The meeting among others was attended by Vijay Bhagotra vice president, J K Vaid general secretary, M L Sharma another vice president, Krishan Singh treasurer, OP Verma assistant treasurer, S P Khajuria and Gurdarshan Singh.
