Private practice is unethical—and doctors should give it up

Rapid Response:

Private practice is excellent for the NHS

Denouncing private practice as unethical is the stuff of an Islington sixth form college debating society. In reality, it adds to the wellbeing of NHS patients. And here’s why.

It is not by accident that a consultant has a good independent practice – It only happens by gaining a good reputation which comes from treating their NHS patients in an exemplary manner.

So, get off your high horse. Private practice is a powerful force for consultants to do their very best for their NHS patients. Especially those who have a Maserati or a chalet in the Swiss Alps funded by income from their private practice. They simply could not afford for their reputation to take a nose dive and that will happen if they neglect their NHS patients.
