KANPUR: Tobacco businessman accused of thrashing his wife Richa Shukla, a niece of former Test cricketer Chetan Chauhan, was arrested from a five-star hotel in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Accused Sandeep Shukla and his aide identified as Rajkumar Srivastava were arrested from Hotel Hyatt Regency in Delhi, the police said.
"Sandeep, absconding since the incident was reported on May 1, has been arrested with an from a hotel in New Delhi with the help of Delhi police on Wednesday.
They were brought to the city on Thursday. He would be produced before the magistrate after undergoing a medical examination," SSP Shalabh Mathur said.
Richa, daughter of Devendra Singh, residing at Ideal Home Town, Rajeshwari, in Bengaluru, was married to Sandeep Shukla of Shuklaganj in Unnao in 1995.
In her complaint lodged with Gangaghat police, Richa had alleged that Sandeep had drugged and brutally assaulted her at their residence on April 30. She had called up her parents and relatives and apprised them about the incident on Friday (May 1). Her parents, who were in Bengaluru, informed Chetan Chauhan about the incident. Chauhan contacted IG Ashutosh Pandey and asked him to look into the matter.
The police reached Sandeep's residence in Shuklaganj. He managed to flee in a four-wheeler with Richa. When Sandeep reached 80 Feet Road in the city, Richa managed to jump out of the moving vehicle and raised an alarm. Sandeep and his henchmen escaped.

Passers-by took her to Nazirabad police station and from there to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital. "On the basis of Richa's complaint of domestic violence, an FIR was registered under Sections 498 (a), 365, 147/307/328/323/504/506 of IPC against Sandeep, Pramod Mishra, Shaina Singh, Rajkumar Srivastava, Hari Prasad Chauhan, Umesh Shukla, Sukhdeo Shukla and Amit Trivedi with Gangaghat police. Since she was rescued and treated in the city, another FIR was lodged with Nazirabad police," the SSP added.
During investigation, the police traced Sandeep's location in Delhi through his mobile phone. A team headed by SO Nazirabad Virendra Yadav reached Delhi. With the help of RK Puram police, the team arrested Sandeep and Rajkumar Srivastava in room no: 157 of the hotel situated at Bhikaji Cama Place on Ring road in New Delhi. Rs 3 lakh was recovered from him.
