Eunuch officer Amruta Alpesh Soni awaits visa

Soni had applied for a visitor’s visa to attend 14th annual Philadelphia Tans Health Conference
Raipur: US embassy in Kolkata has “put on hold” a visitor’s visa application of a medical officer, a transgender, of Chhattisgarh following gender confusion. Amruta Alpesh Soni, nodal officer in Chhattisgarh government’s health department, has been informed by the US consulate in Kolkata that her application for a visitor’s visa has been put on hold on the ground that her gender ‘T’ (transgender), mentioned in her Indian passport, is not recognised by it.
Clarified that they were aware only of male and female options and no ‘T’ option, she has been informed by the visa officials in the US consulate in Kolkata that she would be informed in due course on the fate of her visa.
Soni had applied for a visitor’s visa to attend 14th annual Philadelphia Tans Health Conference, scheduled next month, where she was to present a paper on HIV in transgenders living in India.
