While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken a massive project to ensure that the perennially-flooded Hindmata does not witness waterlogging this monsoon, it is ensuring complete relief only after it completes work on the Britannia storm water pumping station.

The pumping station is part of the much-delayed Brihanmumbai Storm Water Drain (BRIMSTOWAD) project, envisaged post the 2005 deluge.

For the past four months, BMC has been working on connecting missing drain links on the 500-metre stretch covering Ambedkar Road till the Acharya Dhonde Marg.

The saucer-shaped junction gets waterlogged every monsoon, creating traffic snarls right from Dadar towards Fort in the three months.

As the junction is below the sea-level, it leads to major waterlogging, and even the presence of high-powered de-watering pumps serves no purpose, officials confirmed.

Festive offer

SVR Srinivas, additional municipal commissioner, in-charge of the storm water drains (SWD) department, said, “The work that we are undertaking now can withstand moderate rainfall and reduce flooding by 60 per cent. However, we can assure complete relief from flooding once we complete work on the Britannia pumping station by the end of this year.”

BMC is expecting to complete the work within the next 15 days to provide some relief to commuters. The work was undertaken four months ago after a survey conducted by the SWD department.

“It is a major work that should have been undertaken decades ago,” Srinivas added.

Once completed, the much-delayed station is expected to mitigate waterlogging observed in flood-prone areas of Hindmata, Abhuyadaya Nagar, Petit Lane, Jijibhoy lane, Madkebua chowk, Kalachowki, Lalbaug and areas surrounding Reay Road and Byculla.
