Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria has issued orders to immediately appoint security guards at the exit gates of the Nagpada police hospital, following reports of empty liquor bottles being found inside the premises.
On May 5, The Indian Express had reported how addicted police officers, admitted for various ailments, could easily walk out to buy liquor bottles from outside the hospital. Moreover, they have also been found drinking alcohol inside the hospital. With vacancy in security guards’ posts, the hospital staff has not been successful in stopping the officers from leaving the premises.
The city has two police hospitals, located at Naigaon and Nagpada. On Thursday, Dhananjay Kulkarni, police spokesperson, said: “The commissioner took note of the report and demanded an explanation from the hospital’s main doctor. Order has now been issued to station police constables at the gates to monitor the movements of those admitted.”

While the hospital’s police surgeon Dr S M Patil said plans to install CCTV cameras are also in the pipeline, Kulkarni said the plan would be implemented at a later stage. “As CCTVs will involve some finances, it will take time,” he said.
At present, Patil himself takes surprise rounds to keep a vigil on the patients at night.
On May 4, seven empty whisky bottles were found in a laundry bin and from underneath two cupboards.
Last week, an admitted police officer from Sakinaka police station was found drinking alcohol inside the hospital. Though he had not fully recovered from his hand injury, the hospital administration decided to discharge him. The hospital has also asked all those willing to be counselled for alcohol de-addiction to attend an ‘alcohol anonymous’ counter.
