Security agencies are working inside and outside the IGI Airport to curb drug smuggling.

Security agencies working inside and outside the IGI Airport have been left red faced. Seizure of around 100 kilograms of lethal drugs has been made just within a month (March-April). An indicator that the drug market is flourishing in the city and that there are enough incentives given by the drug mafia that induce many to take the risk of smuggling drugs.

"The inflow of the drug continues because there is a big drug market in the city and the unfortunate part is that the drug mafia targets the youth and school students" says a Airport police official on condition of anonymity .

Data available shows that between March - April the agencies seized 92 kilograms of pseudoephedrine drugs, 2 kilograms of heroine, around 2 kilograms of cocaine and thousands of Zolfresh tablets. Some drugs are in the process of identification in the labs.

Realising the seriousness of the situation various security agencies at the airport have now come together to crack the nexus and weaken the drug mafia active in the city.

Rohit Sharma Regional Zonal Director of Narcotic Control Bureau says "Off late we have stepped up the vigil and are conducting joint operations with CISF, Customs, Immigration and Delhi Police".

The joint action group has identified some "recognised" schools and areas in the city where the exchange of drugs prominently takes place. Policemen in plain clothes are keeping vigil outside these schools and colleges.

"There are some students who are directly in touch with the peddlers. We have identified many paan waalas near the colleges as well who are into this business. We know some of their techniques and are working closely to nab them red handed" said an official on condition of anonymity.

The joint action group is working closely in areas like Malviya Nagar, Khidki Extension, Sanket, Uttam Nagar and Dwarka. A custom official says that many loaders working at the IGI airport live in the same areas where many in the drug business from African countries live. They come in contact and form a nexus. More often than not the smuggled drug from the air route reaches these areas with the assistance of airport staff.

NCB Zonal Rohit Sharma Head says that phone intercepts show that many youth in the city as well are directly in touch with the unscrupulous elements in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Rohit Sharma adds that agencies are doing a good work as is indicative with the amount of seizures taken place but adds there's a lot that needs to be done.

Sources indicate that many youth are continuously getting supply of "Malana cream" from a village in Himachal Pradesh through the domestic air route and even through the road route.

Sources also add that as part of the joint operation sharp eye is also being kept on some airline staff as well.

NCB and Delhi Police sources add that soon a massive exercise will be started across Delhi where landlords who provide their houses to foreigners without proper verification will be taken to task.
