Laura Robson's wrist injury a real worry now, says Barry Cowan

The longer Laura Robson is out, the harder it will be for the former British No 1 to make her comeback in time for Wimbledon, says Barry Cowan.

The 21-year-old has not played since the Australian Open in January 2014 because of a wrist problem but it had been thought she may return at Roland Garros.

Robson, who reached number 27 in the rankings in July 2013, is now expected to delay her return until after the French Open and won't make a competitive comeback until the grass-court season begins.

With a protected world ranking of 58 she is permitted to enter eight WTA tournaments despite her lack of action, but Sky Sports tennis expert Cowan expects Robson to take her time and return when she returns to full fitness.

"There was no point in Laura just entering and playing the French, I mean that would be a no-brainer," he told Sky Sports 3.

"I'm sorry, but that would just be a poor schedule so yes, she (needs) to come back when she can get a run of tournaments on the same surface.

"She's in the fortunate situation where they've got extra tournaments this year.

More from French Open 2015

"There is another week inbetween the French and Wimbledon so she can play some good tennis and get some matches on the board.

"It's always difficult when a player has a wrist injury and the longer they're out the harder it will be for her to get back playing her best tennis, but I certainly wish her well."
