AES successful in reducing red light running – report

AES_Camera

The latest studies performed by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) shows that the Automated Enforcement System (AES) has been successful in reducing instances of red light running despite criticism from politicians and the public, according to The Sun.

The English language daily stated that in the MIROS report, a 2.2% reduction in red light running violations in the first six months was observed since the installation of the cameras at 14 locations in 2012, with an overall 1.23% reduction after one year. The non-compliance rate stood at 4.29% before the implementation of AES.

Among them, motorcyclist featured the highest violation rate of 6.04% before installation (3.71% for cars, 3.69% for other vehicle types), dropping to 4.3% (cars 1.54%, other vehicle types 2.05%) after six months and 3.63% (cars 0.46%, other vehicle types 0.37%) after a year.

PJ Traffic Jam

Researchers from MIROS observed a total of 493,782 vehicles in March and September 2013 over two days (weekdays and weekends) and during peak and off-peak traffic. Four AES-equipped traffic light intersections were studied – at Jalan Klang Lama and Jalan Ipoh in Kuala Lumpur and at Jalan Ipoh-Kuala Kangsar and Jalan Pasir Putih in Ipoh.

In the capital city, 3,613 violations were observed before the installation of AES cameras; that figure was reduced to 2,003 or 1.76% after six months and 1,054 or 0.99% after one year. Ipoh’s figures were 3,257 before AES, 1,775 or 3.07% after six months and 937 or 1.67% after one year.

Out of the near half a million vehicles observed, motorcyclists were the main red light running violators even after AES implementation, standing at 3,129. Car drivers were next at 2,412, followed by those of other vehicles at 228.

Statistics in 2011 showed that road collisions at traffic light intersections in Malaysia resulted in 207 deaths and 706 injuries, MIROS said.

I don’t understand why most motorcyclist do not follow the rules. When accident happens, kasi problem sahaja.

The Polis, even better. They can be at the traffic lights, they can see the Rempit beating the lights but they just smile.

Most times, not just one or two officers at the lights, sometimes even a few. Polis love to berkumpul under the bridge at four way junction to chit chat. They all blatantly see so many moto beating the lights, all they do is smile at the offender.

Datuk Fuad, what kind of officers are these? Just see crime being done but don’t do anything.

Then the officers can even see a dead dog in the middle of the road, or a fallen helmet, or a fallen tree, PDRM officers just pass by, don’t do anything.

In their minds, they say it is not their job. It is DBKL job to pick up that helmet in the middle of the road.

in the UK, the polis officer even climb up the tree to go and catch a cat that is meowing so loud and disturbing the neighbourhood. Not his duty but he goes over and above his duty.

Time PDRM start thinking the same.

Yeah – and when you look on YouTube, see the ones who typically break road laws. See the majority who they are. Then you will understand. Always think that bribery is the solution to everything & when the police didn’t accept it start cursing them to kingdom come in their badly spoken Malay. No wonder even when they die they would burn “Bank of Hell” money just to bribe the devil to go to heaven!

The AES implementation is -mostly- right, save for some places which are CLEARLY intended to make more money (The Putrayjaya 70kmh camera and Slim River 80kmh for instance.)

Oh wait, you mean those AES cameras are still active? Because I still see many cars going over 90km/h at the Bangi AES camera. Or perhaps only the AES cameras that catch red light runner are active, whereas those that catch speed are not?

There’s a junction near my home. Before instalation of trafic light people always complaint about the necessity of it. Always complaint about the gomen that not concern of public safety. But after the light been set up, people always run over it like its never been there.
Sometimes, when i waiting for the green while others just run over, it felt to me that i’m the idiot one.

You should re-read the article. Those percentages are of total cars sampled at those locations and not percent of reduction which is nearly 80%

      total cars running red lights:
      4.29% (before)-2.20% (after 6m)- 1.23% (after 1y)= 0.86%

      percentage reduction is:
      (4.29-0.86)/4.29=79.95%

    MIROS,
please go study or put he AES straighyaway at the KESAS HICOM Interchage. Many vehicles esp coming from Klang to Puchong run over the red light esp the big big lorry/truck..pls before more casualities happen

  • Duh, isn’t that obvious?

I mean would a thief break into a house if he knows there’s a whole bunch of armed policemen inside? Anyone who still runs the red light after having seen that camera is either dumb or just plain asking for trouble.

Have said this before. Must do away with saman for money.

Punish offenders by sending them for counseling and exam resitting. Then work your way up to more heavier punishment.

When someone die on accident, like the Pajero case, we blame government of not doing anything to improve road safety. But when government does something like AES, we blame the government.

  • Motorcyclist out of 10 ,I see 8 of them disobey the traffic light. As long they see no cars, they will just go ahead. What’s wrong with waiting a minute or few seconds longer?

You are either throwing around your own statistics (8/10 lol), or your driving area have very bad motorcyclists!!

Because… if you read the article it says 6.04% of motorcyclist sampled at those locations ran the red light (before AES installed). If your driving area has no AES, we would expect something similar, no?

NO matter what the authority do..in the end it is us who decide if we want to obey rules or disregard them.

change the government if u want to..at the end of the day its still the same. there always gonna be haters, there always gonna be cronies and then we come back here to bash bash bash…

i support the purpose of AES. for me reducing like 1000 cars running of red lights is good..could be better with better enforcement.

    peace.

  • To be honest, AES is a good system as long it is transparent and manage by goverment. By using AES, there should be no more surprise road block in the middle of HW. Setting it up at the traffic lights is absolutely good to ensure no one jump on the red light that can cause accident.
Last but not least: dont bash me due to this honest comment.. :-)

Request government to install AES camera at EVERY traffic light in Cyberjaya. Have an automatic sniper rifle strapped to it too.

Bloody hell the middle-east foreigners men and women. Running red lights, not wearing helmet, reckless driving. You name it, they would’ve done it.

They think Malaysia is like their hometown where everyone rides on camel.
