This year has seen a sharp 18% rise in the number of medical aspirants in Maharashtra. As per the statistics made available by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) – the competent authority responsible for conducting the Common Entrance Test (MH-CET), over 1.94 lakh candidates registered this year as compared to the 1.6 lakh last year.

This sudden increase in numbers has forced the DMER to put in more time and efforts in making suitable arrangements for the exam. The entrance test is slated to be held on May 7 across 36 district headquarters in the state.

The MH-CET serves as a ticket into courses like MBBS, BDS, BAMS, NHMS, physiotherapy, nursing etc. This year's test will be based on the state board syllabus and candidates will not be exposed to negative marking. Results for the same will be declared on June 5.

Coincidentally, the number of aspirants for the national engineering test (JEE Main) saw a dip from around 13.56 lakh students last year to 13.35 lakh this year.

An official associated with MH-CET said, "Since there was a decrease in the number of students opting for engineering courses this year, we hope some of them are shifting to medicine. Besides, the number of students appearing for the standard 12 board exam may also have gone up."

Candidates want quick uploading of question paper

Numerous MH-CET candidates have demanded that question papers should be made available on the website soon after the exam so that they can assess their performance. Some candidates have written to the DMER as well as education minister Vinod Tawde regarding the same. Unfortunately, their pleas have fallen on deaf ears as the authorities have decided to release the question papers on May 18, which, candidates say, is too late.

"The question papers are objective and hence are taken away from the candidates for correction purposes. Uploading them on the website will help all of us to know how well we have performed. Additionally, we can take a call if we need to appear for the entrance tests conducted by others," said one of the candidates.

Rohit, a candidate who wrote to Tawde, said, "The minister's office just told us that our request has been forwarded to the authorities concerned for necessary action. Even after repeated follow-ups with the DMER, I didn't get any satisfactory answer."

A DMER official said, "If the government gives us direction to do so, we will."

Tawde couldn't be reached for comments.
