Shops remained closed in parts of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts on account of Traders’ Day (Vanigar Dhinam) on Tuesday.
Around 2,500 traders from Tuticorin district had gone to attend the State-level traders’ conference in Thanjavur, P. Vinayaka Murthi, State deputy general secretary and district president of Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sanga Peravai, said.
There were around 40,000 shops Tuticorin the district. The traders were not asked to close shops since most of the shops were closed on May 1.
Resolutions
During the conference, led by Peravai leader T. Vellayan, 20 resolutions were passed, he noted. Through the resolutions, the traders sought the intervention of the Central government to stop Foreign Direct Investments in retail trade to protect small traders, repeal of the Food Standards and Safety Act (FSSA) and change in policies with regard to value-added tax and service tax on commodities, he added.
