On tour with her new album. Soul of Morocco, Moroccan-Saharian soul singer Oum will be performing on two consecutive nights in Cairo, at El-Geneina Theatre and the Cairo Jazz Club.
A singer, composer and bilingual lyricist who writes her songs mixing the Moroccan Darija dialect with English, Oum is known across the Middle East and Europe for merging Arabian Saharan sounds with jazz and soul.
On 9 May, at El-Geneina Theatre, and 10 May at the Cairo Jazz Club, Oum will play her new album, which includes 12 of her songs, played to a quartet double bass, guitar, flute, saxophone, percussion and oud.
According to her website, “This [album] arose from her desire to reveal the wealth and cultural diversity of Morocco while conjugating it to the rhythms and to the sounds of other musics of the world.”
Her name comes from the Moroccan Oum El-Ghaït, meaning ‘Mother of relief,’ a name given to girls born during rainfall in the desert.
The Soul of Morocco tour starts in France and will be stopping by festivals and venues in five countries aside from Egypt, including Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Switzerland and Morocco’s Mawazine Festival in Rabat.
