The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) has held Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh wholly responsible for thousands of teachers not receiving their pension.
The issue was discussed in depth on Monday during a meeting attended by several senior citizens and former teachers.
“Since August 2014, in a clear act of petty vendetta after the rollback of the four-year undergraduate programme, he [Mr. Singh] has withheld the pension and retirement benefits of thousands of retiring teachers and non-teaching employees, bringing them to the brink of insolvency and despair,” said DUTA president Nandita Narain.
According to the DUTA, in order to perpetuate this “evil design”, the V-C had taken an arbitrary decision during an Executive Council meeting in 2014 to withdraw the pension scheme granted to employees by the University itself between 1987 and 1998.
“He also decided to challenge the major pensionary relief granted to thousands of employees by an order of the High Court on April 2014,” said DUTA secretary Harish Khanna.
“The DUTA has demanded that all teachers appointed before January 1, 1986, be given pension as was the intention of the then government, when it had passed an order to that effect. In fact, teachers appointed after January 1, 1986, were all compulsorily put in the pension scheme,” added Ms. Narain.
Several teachers spoke about their plight after being denied retirement benefits.
