NEW DELHI: Delhiites have slowly started turning towards renewable energy generation. Discoms
BSES Rajdhani and Yamuna claim to have become the first to energize six rooftop solar ‘net metering’ projects generating in total 86KW of solar power.
Last year,
DERC had announced regulations for net metering giving Delhiites a chance to become renewable energy suppliers. The regulations outlined how people can generate renewable energy in their premises and reduce their electricity bills by the amount of power they supply to the grid.
The regulator urged discoms to promote the concept so consumers could benefits from the initiative.
“Solar net metering has multiple benefits. It gives consumers a chance to become renewable energy suppliers and reduce their electricity bills. The amount of power a person supplies and draws back from the grid will be metered. If they draw more than their supply, the difference will be billed to them,” explained an official.
Officials said
BRPL has started five projects in south and southwest Delhi. Of these, four are domestic — in Kailash Colony, Pushpanjali, GK-III and Pushp Vihar — and one is commercial in Pushp Vihar. “These five connections have a capacity of 66KW of solar power. They can help consumers save between 360 and 3,600 units, worth Rs 3,000 to Rs 32,000, every month,” said a BSES spokesperson.
BYPL has started the first project at East Point School in Vasundhara Enclave of east Delhi with a capacity of 20KW.
