Amritsar, May 3

BJP president Amit Shah today paid obeisance at the ancient Ram Tirath Temple, believed to be the hermitage of Bhagwan Valmiki where he penned the Ramayana.

During his two-day visit to the holy city, he held two meetings of active members and core members late last night. Heads of district units of the BJP from Punjab also participated in the same. He held both meetings, which concluded at 12 midnight, at the Circuit House where he was staying in the city.

With a view to strengthening the party before the 2017 Assembly elections, Shah reviewed the party’s membership drive and its performance in the state. He congratulated party workers in Punjab for enrolling 23 lakh members in the state from the previous 3.5 lakh.

He asked party leaders in the state to reach out to every village and booth to apprise people about policies of the party and works done by the Narendra Modi-led Central Government in the past 11 months.

He asked them to disseminate the performance of the Jan Dhan Yojna, higher compensation given to farmers who suffered due to the unseasonal rains recently and auction of coal mines and spectrum which earned Rs 3.25 lakh crore for the national exchequer.

It is learnt that some of the state BJP leaders pointed out high-handedness of certain Akali leaders.

Meanwhile, another BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya, a cabinet minister from Madhya Pradesh, attended a workers’ contact programme at a private hotel here today. The meeting lasted over three hours. The contact programme began in the city on May 1.
