KSCSTE scholarships presented

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy gave away the annual Prathibha scholarships to 100 students who had secured top marks in basic sciences in their higher secondary examinations here on Wednesday.

Presenting the scholarships, instituted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (KSCSTE), Mr. Chandy said there was need to introduce young talent into the field of science even as the nation celebrated its scientists.

Among those present on the occasion were K. Muraleedharan, MLA; Suresh Das, KSCSTE executive vice-president; K. George Thomas, professor and dean, IISER, Thiruvananthapuram; K.K. Ramachandran, member secretary, KSCSTE; George Varghese, director, KSCSTE; and K.R. Lekha, head, WSD, KSCSTE.

The Prathiba scholarship scheme, launched in 2012, now has over 250 scholars pursuing degree in basic sciences within and outside the State. The scheme also offers opportunity for students to interact with eminent scientists and academics, and familiarise themselves with research in reputed academic and research and development institutions through science camps.

Female students have 50 per cent reservation and this year, 84 of the 100 scholars are women.

Apoorva Gopinath of Farook College, Kozhikode, topped the merit list by securing 100 per cent marks in 12t{+h}standard basic science examinations.
