PUNE: Such strenuous travel to reach your place of work can take a toll on people. Backaches, irritability, constant fatigue and pollution-related health issues are some after effects of a bad commute.
Rahul Alate had been travelling to his Hinjewadi phase III office since he joined Pune for work. The one-and-half hour drive to his office had become a routine for him from his Pimple Saudagar residence.
But the travel and the long hours behind the wheel driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic was taking a toll on his back, which he realized sawhen, one day, to his horror he could not get up from his seat. In utter pain, he visited a doctor immediately who advised him to stay away from office.
"I could not sit, or stand, forget drive. I was having to stay back very last at night, and sometimes go back early to office for an entire month when my project was in a critical situation. At such times, people like me in the managerial position, rarely have time to give a thought to other things. Also, since the timings were erratic, I was taking my own vehicle regularly," he said.
Alate could only join office after a six-month break and now has to take precautions on a regular basis. He is now trying to use the Hinjewadi PMPML and Metrozip buses as much as he can.
There are others who find the commute tedious, and so try to avoid personal vehicles. "I try to take the bus, the service is good from my home in Bavdhan. But the timings are very erratic. The frequency of 20 minutes can turn into one or two hours delay without prior notice on any given day," said Vijay Kulkarni who has been working in Hinjewadi for 15 years.
After six months at work, S Prasad, who was recruited from Chennai, began to look for jobs back home because he could not adjust to the long commute from Kondhwa to Hinjewadi.
