Roger Federer had to dig deep for a place in the last four of the Istanbul Open as he survived a fiercely-contested quarter-final against Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

The Swiss world number two, who is looking to secure his third trophy of 2015 following wins in Brisbane and Dubai, was on court for two hours and 28 minutes before eventually overcoming his Spanish rival 7-6 (7/3) 6-7 (5/7) 6-3.

Federer's next opponent in the tournament will be eighth seed Diego Sebastian Schwartzman, who recovered from a disappointing start to beat fourth seed Santiago Giraldo 0-6 6-2 6-2.

Second seed Grigor Dimitrov had a slightly easier time of things on court, with five breaks of serve helping him record a 6-4 6-3 victory over Croatia's Ivan Dodig.

The Bulgarian will now take on Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas in Saturday's semis. The third seed was too strong for Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil as he claimed a 7-5 6-3 win.
