In one of the worst road accidents in West Bengal in recent times, 15 persons of marriage party, including the bride and the groom, were killed at Madarihat in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district.

The accident happened in the early hours of Friday when a vehicle carrying the people hit a stationary truck parked on National Highway 31.

While 12 persons, including the bride and groom, died on the spot, three succumbed to their injuries at a State-run hospital. Six persons were injured critically. The dead also include the driver of the vehicle and helper which hit the stationary vehicle.

PTI adds:

The vehicle, carrying a marriage party, was coming from Birpara after the marriage ceremony and collided with the truck coming from the opposite direction, Superintendent of Police Akash Meghariya said.

Of the six injured, three persons died in the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital at Siliguri. Condition of others was critical, he said.

The truck was seized and its driver arrested.
