Art, theatre, campus: How Delhi's all for Nepal
It's not just the government and the NGOs that are reaching out to respond to the tragedy that rocked Nepal. From all across Delhi, students, artists, singers, musicians, DJs Nepalis living here as well as Delhiites have been quick to respond, in ways large and small. We bring you a recap.
Nepali students
The Nepalese Student Association of Delhi University organised a fundraising campaign to help earthquake victims in Nepal.
All the funds collected ­ in cash and kind ­ will be sent to the victims via the Nepal Embassy. The students are collecting funds outside various gates of Rajeev Chowk metro station, inside DU campus, at Vishwa Vidyalaya metro station, Kingsway camp and Kamla Nagar. They have also taken the help of rickshaw-pullers and auto-drivers to spread the word about their donation drive.
The DU-based association of students has a total strength of 250. Most of the association members have their families stranded in Kathmandu and nearby areas. The students say they can not leave for Nepal with exams round the corner.
Candlelight vigil
Members of the Hatemalo Nepali Student Group organised a candle light vigil in Laxmi Nagar to demonstrate moral support for the victims of the earthquake in Nepal. They also gathered funds and materials from the attendees to send to Nepal. "The recent earthquake has claimed the lives of around 2000 and injured around 5000 people. As we are unable to physically support them, we are trying to raise funds for the aid of these people. We have organised this event to collect money and materials from students to send to Nepal. We also organised a candle light vigil to demonstrate our moral support for the people who are suffering in Nepal," says Bishal Bhattarai, president of the group.

Music: A gig to raise funds
Subir Malik,lead guitarist and manager of Parikrama, tells us, "We performed for Uttarakhand and Kashmir, and this time again we have organized a gig on May 10 at Striker, Vasant Kunj, to raise funds for Nepal. Artistes like Vishal Dadlani,Farhan Akhtar, Agni, Parikrama and Indian Ocean performing. We also have celebs like Nimrat Kaur, who'll be coming to show sup port. Meiyang Chang will be hosting the event. I even received calls from Arijit Singh and Usha Uthup,who really want to be part of it. Arijit said he will be part of the next tribute concert for Nepal we are planning to have in other cities. Northeastern artiste,Bipul Chettri,and artistes from Nepal like Adrian Pradhan, of 1974 AD, and Abhaya and the Steam Injuns will also be performing with us."
Speaking about how he will ensure the funds reach those who need it,he adds, "The airports are choked and it's difficult to tell if the funds will reach the people who really need it. I will make sure that the funds reach the victims by road, through proper sources."
The band was also supposed to per form at Kalimpong,which was also left shaken by the earthquake. "We were supposed to perform there on May 2, but it was postponed due to the earthquake. If the gig happens, it will be a tribute to Nepal," Subir says.
Theatre: Asmita members heading out
Members of the Delhi-based Asmita Theatre Group will be heading to Nepal to help people affected by the earthquake. They will be taking things like jaggery,blankets,masks, etc for the quake victims. Arvind Gaur who runs the group, tells us," Two of our members are from Nepal. One of them has suffered major loss and his house has been completely destroyed during the earthquake.We are sending him to Nepal and a few of our team members will be going on May 3 with some supplies. There are many areas that have been cut off and our endeavour will be to take these supplies to those farflung areas."
DU for nepal
DU students are also trying extend their support to Nepal and have formed a group called DUforNepal. Divyansh Singhi, who is part of the core team, says, "We have been collecting money for three-four days.Our collection in kind is being sent to Nepal via private charter. The money we are collecting is being used for various purposes. We have sent 35 tents to Kathmandu, `50,000 has been sent to Nepal Red Cross Society. We also organised langar in Kathmandu. We have been collecting money in Khan Market, CP and Hudson Lane."
DJ, CJ, and more
Barsoom in Hauz Khas Village,have posted on social media asking guests to donate throughout the month of May.A portion of their daily sales will also be donated and contributions will be handed over to the Nepal Embassy. A gig held at the venue on Thursday saw many turn up for the cause. Papa CJ performed at a fund raiser to support relief efforts on May 01 at Aqua, The Park, CP. Arjun Chopra, one of the organizers, said, "We will be sending the money to Doon School Old Boys Society, who will forward it to the Choudhry group in Nepal (a Nepalese business family who have currently converted 10-12 schools into shelters for victims) with the help of the Nepalese ambassador." Some Delhi DJs will be coming together tomorrow at 100% Rock Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj, to raise funds.DJ Nisheeth, founder of Delhi Underfound,says,"DJ Sangay Nedu,DJ Parsh and N*HILATE,among other will be performing. Soon after the earthquake,we thought we should do something to help the victims, and we have finally decided on a date and venue. We are working with a Delhi-based NGO,Lakshyam, who mostly organize street plays."
