A special team that was formed to trace the kidnapper of the nine-year-old Ramesh was arrested on Friday. The boy was allegedly kidnapped on Wednesday afternoon from Indira Nagar in Gopalapatnam area.
The kidnapper was identified as Laveti Rama Krishna (19), a native of Laveti Peta, Bonthala Koduru mandal, Srikakulam district.
The kidnapper, an Intermediate drop-out, moved to the city of Visakhapatnam about three months ago and had also worked with a courier company for around two months. With the hope of making some quick money, he hatched a plot to kidnap the boy.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone two) Ramgopal Naik, the boy was playing with his friend Mahesh (6) near their house. The accused was passing that way on a motorbike and the boys had asked for a lift. After covering a distance, Mahesh got down, while Ramesh carried on.
“At that moment, the accused had the idea of kidnapping the boy. When Ramesh wanted to get down after some time, Rama Krishna promised to buy a cycle and took him to his house at Appalanarasayya Colony in Pendurthi,” said Dr. Ramgopal Naik.
Cycle promised
On reaching the house, the accused fed the boy in the night and put him to sleep, promising to buy the cycle in the morning. In the morning, the accused took the mobile number of the boy’s father and before leaving the house, tied the boy’s hands and legs with the help of a shoelace and locked the house from outside to make a ransom call.
But in the meantime, the boy started crying and hearing it, the neighbours peeped through the window and found the boy tied down.
One of the neighbours called up the police and the boy was rescued, said ACP (morth) Bhima Rao.
A manhunt was launched and the accused was nabbed at his cousin’s house at Prahaladapuram.
