National Law University to come up near Ghanahatti: Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir

SHIMLA: The National Law University (NLU) would be set up at Ghanahatti near Shimla at a cost of Rs 400 crore, Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir today said.
"We are making efforts to see that university is made functional during the current session for running five-year and three-year law courses. The university will be directly under the state High Court, unlike few states having different arrangement," Justice Mir said.

The announcement to set up the University was made jointly by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and Chief Justice during three-day north-zone judicial conference last week.

Chief Justice Mir, who is brain behind the project, said that the Government would soon promulgate an ordinance for establishing the Law University and later the Ordinance will be replaced by a Bill, which would be required to be passed by the state assembly.

Beside the university campus, twin campus of the International Arbitration Meditation Center (IAMC) and state-of-the-art Judicial Academy may start functioning from a temporary accommodation, before the project is formally launched.

The institution will have all modern facilities like administrative block, VIP hostels, staff hostel, staff quarters and an independent helipad for the visiting legal luminaries from India and outside.

The state judicial academy project, estimated to cost Rs 163 crores will be another landmark for the town as building being designed to depict all essential features of hill architecture .

Local material including carved stones will be used in the construction of the campus and High Court has set a target of May 2017 for inauguration of the Arbitration center and judicial academy, Chief Justice added.
