After three years of deficit budget, the Vellore Corporation on Thursday presented a surplus budget of Rs. 2.13 crore for 2015-2016.
The present council was elected in 2011.
The last three years have been deficit budgets, and the one for 2015-2016 is the first surplus budget in this council’s term. According to the budget estimates, the civic body has projected revenue of Rs. 441.73 crore and expenditure of Rs. 439.59 crore in 2015-2016. The Corporation has projected a surplus of Rs. 2.13 crore in the budget.
In the projected revenue, revenue receipts account for Rs. 92.26 crore and capital fund accounts for Rs. 349.47 crore. This includes Rs. 187.56 crore from revenue funds, 249.01 crore from water supply and drainage and Rs. 5.15 crore from education.
Of the Corporation’s estimated expenditure of Rs. 439 crore, Rs. 248.87 crore will be spent on water supply and drainage and Rs. 4.72 crore on education. Buildings will get Rs. 16.35 crore, while Rs. 19.3 crore will go for storm water drains.
In addition, Rs. 16.8 crore has been earmarked for restoration of Kaanaru channels, Rs. 10.6 crore will be spent for public toilets and Rs. 11.02 crore for street lights.
