Former Member of Parliament and AICC official spokesperson Madhu Yaskhi Goud has criticized the Centre that it was spending crores of rupees on the Swachh Bharath but was least bothered about the upliftment of scavengers and sanitary workers in the villages.
Keeping the environs clean was very important and for which whatever programme that were to be taken up would be supported. But, this largely depends on the scavengers and sanitary workers as they regularly strove for the neatness while removing litter, garbage and all kinds of rubbish in villages, he said while expressing his solidarity to their agitation, here on Thursday.
Strike camp
On his arrival at the town on Thursday Mr. Goud visited the relay hunger strike camp of the gram panchayat karobars (bill collectors) and sanitary workers before the District Panchayat Office and promised them to take their demands with the Government for their early disposal. Meanwhile, the agitation entered the 17th day today.
Earlier R. Shyam, president, the Gram Panchayat Contract Karobars Union, apprised the senior Congress leader of their problems and urged him to exert pressure on the Government to solve their long pending demands. Mr. Madhu Goud said that there were over 5,000 such workers in the district and getting a meagre monthly income of Rs.2,000 which was hardly enough to feed their families.
Mr. Goud wanted the Government to give job security to them besides providing PF facility and increasing wages. He also demanded that their wages should be paid through treasury and be promoted the qualified karobars and workers as panchayat secretaries.
