The district administration has clarified that Aadhaar card was not mandatory for the rural poor to seek employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

In a press release here on Thursday, Collector K. Nanthakumar has said a disinformation campaign was going on that Aadhaar card was mandatory to get 100 days guaranteed employment under the scheme and it was totally false.

The process of linking Aadhaar card number with the bank accounts was going on but Aadhaar number was not necessary for getting employment under the scheme, the Collector clarified.

The employees, however, should have bank account in one of the banks in their area as the weekly wages would be credited into their bank accounts, the Collector said. Those who seek employment under the scheme should apply to the local Panchayat president and obtain the employment card.

They would be paid based on their day’s work and at the end of the week, the salary would be credited into the individual’s bank account, the Collector said adding the daily wage has been increased from Rs. 167 to Rs. 183.
