Maria Sharapova is on the cover of international Esquire‘s Bulgarian issue this month, bringing up two questions: 1) There’s an Bulgarian Esquire and 2) Who was deemed better enough to be on the cover of American Esquire?
Sharapova, the five-time Grand Slam champion who will look to defend her title at Roland Garros next month, also posted some more photos from the shoot on her Instagram page.
The Russian recently lost her long grip on the No. 2 ranking to Simona Halep, which could mean a semifinal showdown at the French with her arch-nemesis Serena Williams, whom she hasn’t defeated in a decade.
Sharapova will also try to win back-to-back titles in Madrid, the dual ATP-WTA tournament that begins next week.
The Bulgarian connection, of course, comes from Sharapova’s relationship with Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, who’s currently ranked No. 11 in the ATP rankings.
