April 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - MADURAI:

The city police have put up 31 watchtowers in Chithirai, Masi and Avani Moola Streets as part of the security arrangements for the celestial wedding of Meenakshi-Sundareswarar on Thursday.

A Sub-Inspector of Police and two policemen would be present to regulate the devotees and monitor them with cameras. Police help desks have been put up at vantage points around the temple to give instructions to the devotees, a statement said.

The police have banned distribution of ‘prasadam’ by individuals on Aadi and Chithirai Streets without police permission. Such distribution points should have proper barricades and separate queues for men and women.

Devotees will be allowed for darshan of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar after they are brought to Old Kalyana Mandapam. A total of 5,000 policemen and officers will be deployed for the Chithirai festival. A total of 200 spotters from various districts have been deployed to keep a vigil on criminals.

People can seek police help on the following numbers during the festival time: 94981-01360; 0452-2350760; 2350800; 2350700 and 2330070.
