Colombia: Food prices continue to decrease

The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) stated, via the Agricultural Price and Supply Sector's Information System (Sipsa), that the prices of vegetables, fruits, and tubers had decreased during the last week.

Celery prices, for example, fell in 28 of the 30 markets where it is offered, including Surabastos. This decrease was due to the good production received from the municipalities of El Santuario, Marinilla (Antioquia), Pasto (Nariño) and the savannah of Bogota. In Medellín and Cali, for example, the kilo was sold for $596 and $890 pesos, respectively, 29.49% less than in the previous week.

There was also a decrease in the prices of Valencia and Tangelo oranges, green, red and imported royal gala apples, passion fruit, kiwi, Maradol papaya, blackberry from Castilla, papelillo avocados, Tommy and sugar mangoes, Isabela grapes, gold pineapples, Oneco and Arrayana tangerines, pear guava, and bananas from Uraba. Passion fruit, for example, had a lower quote in 27 of the 33 markets where it was traded due to the increased production in Cajamarca (Tolima), Neiva (Huila), La Union (Valle del Cauca), Chinacota (Norte de Santander) and Antioquia.

Meanwhile, there was a reduction in the wholesale prices of the unica potato due to the higher volume of cargo received from the Cundinamarca, Boyaca and the Ipiales plateau (Nariño), as their crops are in their harvest period. This behaviour was recorded in the 25 markets where this potato variety was commercialized. In Neiva, for example, the kilo of this tuber was sold for $993, i.e. 16.21% less than in the previous week.

Throughout this week, there was a downward trend for the price of the best quality rice prices in 17 of the 30 markets where it was marketed as a result of a higher level of supply. In Cali and Neiva, the kilo was sold for $2,957 and $2,880 pesos respectively, 4.20% less than in the previous week.
