All houses in the district will have individual toilets through a special subsidy-based programme to be implemented this financial year.
The district administration, through the panchayat union office here, conducted a survey in all the 27 village panchayats in which 7,891 households were found to resort to open defecation due to lack of household toilets.
“The Union Territory of Puducherry grants special subsidy under the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharath and also Chief Minister's Health Scheme. Each household toilet will be constructed at an estimate of Rs. 22,000. While Rs. 2,000 will be contributed by the beneficiary, Rs. 12,000 is contributed by the Centre under the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharath scheme, and Rs.8,000 by the Puducherry Chief Minister's Health Scheme," said E.Vallavan, Collector.
He said the toilets would be constructed in a phased manner.
In the first phase, 1,315 toilets would be constructed and households in Tirunallar (North), Nedungadu, Niravi (East), Niravi (West) and Tirupattinam (South) would be covered, he said.
“The programme aims at preventing the incidence of any epidemic and protection of the groundwater,” he said.
