KV students run signature campaign against accidents

Students and teachers from Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 Panambur have asked Police Commissioner S. Murugan and Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim to take steps to make the busy Nantoor junction safe for motorists.

The students and staff of KV Panambur on Tuesday submitted to Mr. Murugan and Mr. Ibrahim copies of the signature campaign they carried out, demanding safety measures at the busy junction. This campaign follows two recent accidents at the junction, including the one on February 27 in which the headmaster of Kendriya Vidyalaya was seriously injured while his wife, son and a motorist died.

“Many people have lost lives. Our headmaster is still recovering from his injuries. The pace of safety measures at the junction has to increase,” said Navya B.L, a class 12 student, one of the student leaders coordinating the campaign.

M. Bhagyalakshmi, the in-charge Principal of the school, said the move to have a signature campaign was initiated by the students after the school restarted following summer vacation. All teachers actively participated. A group of students and teachers led by Ms. Bhagyalakshmi met Mr. Ibrahim first. He too signed the petition. The petition was submitted to Mr. Murugan later.

Agreeing with the concerns expressed by the students, Mr. Murugan said the solution lay in redesigning the junction to avoid crisscrossing of traffic. “I will try my best to make the junction safer for motorists,” Mr. Murugan assured the group.
