Schenker M505 (Clevo W650SC) Notebook Review
For the original German review, see here.
Almost one year ago we tested the Schenker M504, which turned out to be a well-rounded versatile notebook with high-grade display. The successor, the M505, builds on existing strengths and gains slightly in speed, but only if you choose the GeForce GTX 950M. The default graphics card, the GeForce 940M, is - despite the higher base price - unfit to challenge the GeForce GTX 850M of the predecessor.
Those who are looking for a gaming notebook should also upgrade the processor. The 2.2 GHz Intel Celeron 2970M of the base model is neither capable of Turbo Boost (automatic overclocking) nor Hyperthreading (virtual doubling of the amount of cores) and only has a 2 MB L3-cache available. We recommend investing at least 100 Euros (~$109) in a Core-i3 or Core-i5 processor. The Core-i7 range is only suitable to a limited extent due to the finite graphics power (the GeForce GTX 950 belongs to the midrange).
Apart from that, the base configuration, which costs 899 Euros (~$981), comes with 4 GB DDR3-RAM and a 500 GB hard drive. Those who choose 8 or 16 GB and a combination of HDD and SSD are required to pay a much higher price. Hence, our test configuration reaches almost 1,400 Euros (~$1528), which is significantly more than some of the competitors ask for (Asus N551, Acer Aspire V15, HP Envy 15 …).
Case
In terms of design, the M505 is the twin brother of its predecessor. Its review takes a closer look at the case, the equipment and the input devices. The only difference we could observe was the changed touchpad surface: Instead of a smooth finish, the mouse substitute offers a rough surface, which gives an improved feedback. Please note: All pictures in the image gallery are from the M504.
Display
The new display is another feature that needs to be praised. Instead of the LG Philips LP156WF4-SPB1 the M505 employs an AU Optronics B156HAN01.2 (the XMG A505 sends it regards).

Although the old model already convinced with its high contrast and a relatively low black value, the successor comes off with a small advantage in these categories. Our measuring instrument established 1,250:1 and 0.22 cd/m² in comparison to the old model’s 930:1 and 0.33 cd/m². The slightly lower illumination (86 vs. 90%) and a 10% lower brightness (268 vs. 296 cd/m²) are in our opinion negligible.

* ... smaller is better
The AU Optronics' biggest advantage is the improved color fidelity. As the screenshots below prove, the grayscale, the RGB balance and the color saturation are already more than acceptable when delivered. A fact that does not apply to the M504. This is topped off by the bigger color space coverage: 91% sRGB and 59% AdobeRGB are quite a statement. The predecessor display had to be content with 72% and 50%.
In terms of viewing angle stability, the M505 does well once again. Deviations occur only at steep angles from above or below, which is typical for the IPS technology. TN panels stand no chance against the AU Optronics. Criticism is allowed for its outdoor capabilities. Due to its mediocre brightness, the M505 lacks visibility in bright places - despite the anti-glare surface.
Performance
As mentioned before, the components are highly similar to those of the predecessor. To allow a smooth everyday experience with Windows programs, we set up the M505 with a midrange processor and a 250 GB solid- state drive. The package is rounded off with 8 GB DDR3-RAM and a 750 GB HDD spinning at 7,200 rpm.
Processor
The Core i5-4210M is a 2.6 GHz dual-core model. Equipped with Turbo Boost and Hyperthreading it can reach up to 3.2 GHz and work with eight threads simultaneously. 3 MB L3-Cache is quite impressive (4-8 MB @Core i7) for a dual-core.
Another feature that needs to be mentioned is the integrated graphics chip. Since the M505 supports the Optimus technology by Nvidia, the system is able to switch dynamically between the HD Graphics 4600 and the dedicated GeForce GPU. Besides saving energy, it has positive effects on the heat output as well as the noise level.
But let's get back to the CPU. During the test with Cinebench R11.5, the Core i5-4210M showed an ideal turbo usage of 3.2 GHz with single-core load and 3.1 GHz with multi-core load. Even under extreme conditions, simulated during our stress test with the tools FurMark and Prime95, the turbo is still active (~2.8 GHz). The benchmark values are only a logical result of this behavior. Although the Core i5-4210M cannot keep up with its quad-core brothers in the multi-core scenarios, the dual-core is sufficiently fast for standard tasks such as MS Office, video or web. For games, the graphics card is the limiting factor.
System Performance
Those who include an SSD can expect an extremely high system speed. Our test device does not have to fear comparison to more expensive gaming notebooks in PCMark 7: 5,462 points are quite something for a multimedia laptop. The quad-core option would probably add a few hundred points.

Storage Devices
The 15-inch device can be equipped with a 2.5-inch hard drive and additionally an mSATA-SSD. For the latter, Schenker relies on Crucial (M550 and MX200) and Samsung (850 EVO). In terms of price-performance ratio, any of the three models would make for a solid choice. Most of the time the competing products' only difference is a few bucks. Our test model ran with the 250 GB version of Samsung's 850 EVO. 511 MB/sec sequential read and 496 MB/sec sequential write in the AS SSD benchmark put the mSATA drive among the strongest competitors there are. For even higher values a notebook with a RAID system (e.g. see the MSI GS60) or an SSD based on PCI-Express (Schenker XMG U505) is required.
Graphics Card
While the high-end model GeForce GTX 980M and GTX 970M outshine their predecessors by far due to their new architecture (Maxwell instead of Kepler), Nvidia settled for tuning the clockspeed for the low-priced chips. The effects on the Schenker M505 are especially insignificant. In practice there is almost no difference between 902-1,084 MHz (GTX 850M) and 993-1,124 (GTX 950M). The main issue of the midrange GPU is its small memory interface. A 128-bit bus is not enough anymore for gamers, especially since barebone manufacturer Clevo equipped the GTX 950M with DDR3 instead of the modern GDDR5. The 2 GB memory will also be a bottleneck in the future.

Help |
Despite all this, the GeForce GTX 950M cuts a good figure as an all-round GPU for a multimedia notebook. As long as the M505 does not come in contact with extremely demanding 3D programs, the DirectX 11 chip is powerful enough to cope with the load. The benchmarks make it clear that the performance is similar to the level of the GTX 850M. Advice: Bargain hunters should take advantage of the clearance sale of the M504. While being phased out, this model costs 200 Euros (~$219) less despite similar hardware. Thanks to GDDR5-VRAM, notebooks based on the GTX-860M are yet another economical and faster alternative.

Gaming Performance
Those who do not require maximum details and multiple anti-aliasing in every game should get along just fine with the GeForce GTX 950M. Aside from a few extreme cases such as Assassin's Creed Unity, Watch Dogs, Ryse: Son of Rome and Dragon Age: Inquisition, medium to high settings in the native resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels are possible. More frugal and/or older games (e.g. FIFA 15, Sims 4 and F1 2014) can be played in all their graphics glory.

Emissions
System Noise
The noise generation has barely changed in comparison to the M504. This comes as no surprise as the devices are almost identical. When the notebook is under no or nearly no load the system works rather quietly. Admittedly the tested HDD (Western Digital Black) is always drawing attention with its constant rustling and clattering, but after a long rest period the hard drive as well as the fan shut off completely, muting the M505 altogether. The Clevo barebones' typical and annoying speeding up of the cooling system, which we have noticed quite often in the past, has become a rather rare occurrence. The 3D mode is the biggest negative. An average of 44 dB(A) in 3DMark 06 and up to 50 dB(A) under full load are quite a lot for a multimedia notebook. Other all-rounders prove to be quieter.

Temperature
Although the case fan produces quite a lot of noise during 3D scenarios, the case still noticeably heats up in some areas. After one hour of full load, our measurement instrument displayed up to 44 °C (111.2 °F) at the bottom and up to 42 °C (107.6 °F) at the top. This would not be a problem, if it were not for the palm rest that is also affected. Long gaming sessions can therefore become a bit unpleasant. When in idle mode the device stays substantially cooler. Two hours of idle result in a case temperature of almost 27 °C (80.6 °F, top) and 28 °C (82.4 °F, bottom). All in all, we would label the results as decent. The same goes for the components. The maximum value of 86 °C (186.8 °F) for the Core i5-4210M is not overly hot. As a matter of fact, the GeForce GTX 950M only reached 70 °C (158 °F) during the stress test.

Speakers
Despite the software update (Sound Blaster Cinema v2 instead of v1) the 2.0 system still sounds very feeble. In addition to maximum volume, it is also lacking in precision and bass. Without headset or external speakers, movies, games and songs do not even come close to unfolding their true potential. The sound quality does not stand a chance to that of other multimedia notebooks. Thanks to the included subwoofer, the Asus N551 sounds significantly better.
Energy Management
Power Consumption
Unsurprisingly the power consumption complies with that of the predecessor: 11-18 watts in idle mode and 70-105 watts under load are acceptable for an all-round notebook. With 120 watts, the power supply appears to be sufficiently dimensioned (at least for the use of a dual-core CPU).

Verdict
Admittedly, the complete package of the M505 works well. Nevertheless, we need to point out that; the case is slightly old fashioned. Other multimedia notebooks of the 15-inch format (Asus N551, Acer Aspire V15, HP Envy 15) are lighter, slimmer and/or of better quality. Furthermore, the competitors have the edge over the M505 in terms of sound, input devices and emissions.
The M505's greatest highlight is the high-quality IPS panel, which delights in almost every aspect. The outstanding maintainability and the plentiful configuration possibilities are another reason to buy the notebook, let alone the clean Windows installation that comes without unnecessary bloatware.
Despite all this, it would not hurt if the case manufacturer Clevo put more effort into the next generation. Our wish list contains items such as keyboard lighting, a better positioning of the interfaces and adequate loudspeakers.
Nevertheless, those who are not put off by the somewhat high price, get a strong all-rounder.
