PATNA: The RJD on Sunday opposed the police atrocity and lathicharge on its supporters at Beldari Chak under Gaurichak police station in Patna district. The party constituted an 11-member committee led by former MLA Dharmendra Prasad to probe into the Saturday incident.
State RJD president Ram Chandra Purbey said the committee would visit Beldari Chak and submit its report to the party office within three days.
The party would initiate further course of action on the basis of the panel’s findings, he said.
“Around 40 Dalit families have been residing at an ‘aam gairmazarua’ plot at Beldari Chak for the last 40 years. On Saturday, a joint team of Gaurichak and Punpun police stations reached there and asked the villagers to vacate the plot immediately. When resisted, the policemen not only humiliated the womenfolk but also beat up men and women with the rifle butts and lathis. Nine persons were injured seriously in the lathicharge,” RJD spokesperson Pragati Mehta said.
Mehta also said senior RJD functionaries Dwarika Paswan and Pramod Paswan were among the nine injured. RJD’s state secretary general Mundrika Singh Yadav and state general secretary Madan Sharma visited the PMCH and inquired about their health.
Yadav urged CM Nitish Kumar to take punitive action against the police officials and get the FIR against them withdrawn.
Contrary to the RJD’s claim, a police officer said the police team had gone there at the order of Masaurhi SDO to vacate a ‘gairmazarua’ plot of land which was illegally occupied by some supporters of a political party.
