An engineer and his family were thrashed and threatened with a gun by some men travelling in an SUV for protesting against their rash driving on Sunday night.

The assailants’ vehicle had rammed into the engineer’s Hyundai Accent car, which triggered an argument and the subsequent assault, said the police. The victims provided the police the photographs and the registration number of the SUV in which the accused were travelling. Based on these, two persons have been picked up for questioning and the police said they are set to make arrests soon.

The incident took place in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area at around 10:30 pm on Sunday. There was initial confusion about the jurisdiction of the area where the incident occurred, but a case of attempt to murder, criminal intimidation and illegal confinement was finally lodged at Bindapur police station.

Engineer Gaurav Sharma, his sister Nupur and some relatives were on their way to Tilak Nagar from their home in Najafgarh when the assault reportedly took place. As Sharma halted at a traffic signal in Uttam Nagar, a Xylo rammed into their car from behind.

Sharma got off his car and got into an argument with the driver of the other car. He was, however, abused by the occupants of the car, and they soon emerged from the vehicle and beat him up, a police officer told Deccan Herald. There were reportedly seven assailants.

Sharma’s sister Nupur tried to intervene, but one of the assailants is said to have pulled out a pistol and asked her to keep away. She was also pushed into the car. Seeing the gun, Sharma tried to drive away with his family, but his one of the assailants reportedly snatched his car’s keys. “One of them then pulled out an iron rod from their car and smashed the windscreen of Sharma’s car,” said the police.
