“Defeat of the BNP candidates is certain. There is no way for them to win (the polls),” said Awami League Advisory Council member Amir Hossain Amu at a press conference on Monday, a day before the city polls.

About BNP-endorsed Dhaka North mayoral candidate Tabith Mohammed Awal, he said: “People must be familiar first with the candidate the BNP has endorsed. It's his party's failure.”

Tabith, son of businessman and BNP chief’s advisor Abdul Awal Mintoo, took to politics in the city polls.

The BNP-backed Dhaka South candidate Mirza Abbas is on the run for cases over subversive acts while its Chittagong contestant M Manjur Alam is seen as a failure by his critics.

Amu said the people had abandoned the BNP for its acts of sabotages during the last three months.

“Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Abdullah Al Noman are not contesting despite Khaleda Zia’s request, having realised (what the outcome would be),” he added.

To a question, the senior Awami League leader said: “She (Khaleda) knows her party won’t win (the polls).”

He said the government would not interfere in the election.
