Nearly 550 girl cadets from various schools and colleges in the city are finding out how it is to lead a regimental life at a combined annual training camp conducted by the 1 Kerala Girls Battalion NCC at the Government School for Deaf in Jagathy here.
The 10-day camp, which began on April 20, has Colonel Rajeev Mehta, Officer Commanding of 1 Kerala girls Battalion as the Camp Commandant.
The training at the camp, aimed at improving the personality and leadership qualities of the cadets, includes drill, rifle drills, weapon training, map reading, field signals, home nursing and self development classes, with special sessions in range drill and firing sessions using .22 rifles.
Various competitions including singing, quiz programmes and a number of games are also part of the camp to provide the cadets with a stage to exhibit their talents, NCC officials said.
Self-defence training sessions, including on judo and karate, have been included in the camp, they said, pointing out that the alarming increase in crime in the city had prompted the authorities to include martial art forms for the cadets. Separate sessions for yoga too are being conducted, with participation in the International Yoga Day on June 21 in mind.
The camp also has guest lectures, on traffic awareness by D. Samuel, Sub-Inspector , and on adolescent behaviour by Dr. Nanda from the Government Hospital here, the officials added.
