Kampala.

Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at the grassroots have reason to smile after the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) trained community volunteers to help them provide free legal advice.

The NUDIPU chairperson, Mr Henry Nyombi, said the volunteers, also known as paralegals, will help PWDs in rural areas who face injustice at the hands of able-bodied people seeking to grab their land or deny them access to health services.

“In most communities, PWDs don’t know they have a right to services such as health and good roads. Some of the land they are entitled to is forcibly taken away by others. These paralegals will help to point out the issues to those people who are disadvantaged,” Mr Nyombi said.

Mr David Nangosi, the NUDIPU legal assistant, said the paralegals were fully trained and will educate them on legal procedures on access to justice.

Mr Nangosi said they are also to help in monitoring rights violations of PWDs and report to NUDIPU or other relevant authorities.

He said the first batch of volunteers will serve in Kampala, Gomba, Iganga, Namutumba, Dokolo and Lira districts before they reach out to other areas.
Mr Nyombi also commended the media for advocating rights of PWDs.
